What is Para Yoga?

ParaYoga provides students the rare opportunity to experience a complete approach to practice... “Para” means supreme, ancient, highest, the culmination of all effort. ParaYoga offers students of all levels access to the entire range and sacred power of Yoga. ParaYoga is based on the Six Gems©, ancient teachings that unlock “supreme” accomplishment in practice and life.

The authoritative ancient texts of the Hatha Yoga tradition (like the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika” and “Gherand Samahita”) describe Yoga as a journey that culminates in sublime success and happiness. These teachings describe how through perfection of body, breath, mind, and spirit we access it. When understood and practiced accordingly, practice become “Para” (the supreme, highest, or the place where our very best efforts culminate).

The texts are very clear. Yoga includes all of the following: Asana, Pranayama, Bandha, Mudra, Visualization, Meditation, Chanting, Kriya, Mantra, Kundalini, along with a vast array of other practices. Most of us have heard about these techniques, perhaps we may have even experienced some of them. However, it's difficult to find a single style of Yoga today in which all of these techniques are offered or taught seamlessly as a whole. But that is exactly what ParaYoga is all about.

More and more students are finding that not only are the techniques "other than Asana" accessible, in the hands of a knowledgeable ParaYoga teacher, they link one to the very heart and true power of Yoga's potential. What is Baptiste Power Yoga? 

Baptiste Yoga was founded in the 1940′s by Walt Baptiste and through his son Baron, it has evolved into a practice that holds true to the spirit of its creation while remaining accessible. The physical aspects of Baptiste Yoga style are inspired by the hatha yoga teachings of Krishnamacharya and his students Iyengar and Desikachar, whom Baron Baptiste studied with personally from a young age.

 About Hollace? 

Hollace, 500 E-RYT, has been a student of yoga since 1996. She has spent these years studying various traditions which she incorporates into the Tantra Vinyasa Yoga practice as taught by her teachers, Rod Stryker and Barron Baptiste, among others.

Hollace is co-owner of Yoga Shala Charlotte which offers as its primary styles Para Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga.  She’s been practicing and studying yoga for over 15 years and teaching yoga since 2004.  She is a Para Yoga Certified Level 1 Teacher and also Baptiste Certified.  Hollace has been leading teacher trainings, including trainings for both Baptiste Certifications and Para Yoga, for the last five years. 

Hollace continues to study and practice with her primary teacher, Yogarupa Rod Stryker. Students walk away from Hollace’s classes feeling steady, assured and having learned something new. She has a unique ability to empower students beyond physical strength into mental steadiness, emotional peace and energetic power. Each class is a celebration of anything is possible in yoga and in life.

This workshop is for ALL LEVELS.

About Johnna?

Johnna Smith 500 E-RYT, has been a student of yoga since 1995. She has spent these years studying various traditions which she incorporates into the Tantra Vinyasa Yoga practice as taught by her teachers, Rod Stryker and Barron Baptiste.

Johnna’s background includes studying Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore India (2004, 2006, 2008), Tantra with Yoga Rupa Rod Stryker (since 2001), Vipassana Buddhist practice with S.N. Goenka, and other traditional styles of Hatha yoga in India.

Starting in 2001 she began an in-depth study of Sri i Vidya Tantra Yoga, which led her to Para Yoga with Rod Stryker, she completed his 500 hour teacher training in 2006. Johnna is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit.

Johnna teaches public classes at many studios in Charlotte as well as spending a good part of each year traveling teaching teachers throughout the world. As part of that she offers Teacher Intensive courses and special classes through the United States.

Johnna believes that the yoga mat is a great place to cultivate awareness, with the ultimate goal being to take the practice from the mat into one’s daily life. Johnna is known for being motivational and spiritual in tone while leading you to the edge of your experience on the mat.
